Michael Jackson's groundbreaking music video horror flick has been immortalized among the nation's treasures in the world's largest archive of film, TV and sound recordings. The 14-minute "Thriller" video is among 25 films the Library of Congress added to the registry on Wednesday. It is the first music video included in the 2009 list of cultural treasures that will be preserved for all time.

"Because of the way the recording industry is evolving and changing, we thought it would be good to go back to the developmentof an earlier seismic shift, which was the development of the music video," says Steve Leggett, coordinator of the National Film Preservation Board.

Joining the King of Pop in the 2009 class are The Muppets, who have earned acclaim for their 1979 film The Muppet Movie — which featured the big screen debut of Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy.

Posted: 31 Dec 2009 06:00 AM PST

Viewers who tuned into the Weather Channel Sunday night were treated to a tearjerker with a side of sunny skies as meteorologist Kim Perez got an on-air proposal from her longtime boyfriend, police sergeant Marty Cunningham. Kim had just predicted rainfall for Florida and the Southeast this New Year's Eve when Marty stumbled onto the set.

"Hi!" said the mother of three.

"How are you?" Marty asked.

"Good!" Kim replied.

"We've been talking about this for a long time, and I love you, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. So I'm asking you today," he started getting down on one knee, "Will you please marry me?"

"I will," Kim said, smiling.

Don't you just love a happy ending?

Kim has been obsessed with meteorology ever since she was a little girl.

"I first realized that gender may be an issue very young," Kim wrote on The Weather Channel website. "When I told someone I wanted to be a meteorologist, they asked why a nice girl like me would want to study meteors! I didn't understand the problem until I started looking though books and doing research, I couldn't find any women meteorologists, not even on TV!"

Mike Leach Fired

Posted: 31 Dec 2009 05:53 AM PST

http://cdn.bleacherreport.com/images_root/images/photos/000/786/357/90975707.jpg.8791.0_feature.jpg?1262199802Mike Leach being fired looked impossible a year ago. Yet Mike Leach is fired today, though that may be the beginning of this saga. The Texas Tech football coach was the toast of college football a year ago, with an explosive new offensive style and big wins. A year later, Leach is facing massive criticism, for alleged mistreatment of a injured player - who has major family connections. But even with Mike Leach fired, Texas Tech is not done dealing with him yet.

Last weekend, Leach was accused of locking a player in a dark room on two separate occasions, because he couldn't practice with a concussion. What's more, the player was Adam James, son of ESPN analyst Craig James. Once the family made their complaints public, Leach has been under fire ever since.

First, Texas Tech suspended him for the upcoming Alamo Bowl against Michigan State - which Craig James was supposed to call from the ESPN booth. Then, Leach used his lawyers to file a restraining order against the school, so he could coach the game. He also prepared for the possibility he would be fired - which Texas Tech has now done.

Leach is fired just 11 months after signing a five-year extension, which he earned with an 11-2 breakout year in 2008. He was also due an $800,000 bonus if he was still coaching on New Years Eve - and he was entitled to more money if he was fired before his contract ran out. Therefore, the motivations of Texas Tech have come into question, almost as much as Leach's alleged actions.

CBS Sports also posted e-mails from other players, in which they accuse Adam James of being "lazy and entitled." Leach has also accused Craig James of acting like "a Little League dad" While Leach and the James family go on a "he said, she said" spree, it appears that the formerly hot Texas Tech coach will be unemployed either way.

It doesn't pay to have a big year in the Big 12 nowadays, as recent events have shown. Leach was the Big 12 coach of the year in 2008, and has been fired a year later. This comes after Kansas coach Mark Mangino, who also had a breakout year in 2007, was also fired for alleged mistreatment of players. Combined with Urban Meyer's leave of absence, college football coaches have become a bigger story than their players, even during bowl season.

The fall of Mike Leach comes after 10 years as a Red Raiders coach, and after he was just proclaimed as a visionary offensive mind. But Texas Tech merely finished 8-4 this season, with rumors surrounding Leach's conflicts with the administration, even before this scandal. So Leach has either got what he deserved or been railroaded, depending on who one asks.

Since lawyers are now involved, this story is likely far from over. But its unlikely that it will end with Leach getting his job back - unless he has a plan as intricate as one of his big plays.

Nephelococcygia means CLOUD GAZING

Posted: 31 Dec 2009 05:45 AM PST

Ever heard of "Nephelococcygia,"? I hadn't, till today. Turns out, I have been a participant in nephelococcygia since I was a wee tot, lo those many, many moons ago. Nephelococcygia means "cloud gazer". You know, sitting around, looking at clouds, and expressing "Ooh, there goes a bunny rabbit", or "Wow, there are the Marx brothers". I actually saw the Marx brothers in the clouds once, but that was a long, long time ago, on much better drugs than I'm permitted these days. The term "nephelococcygia" originates from the play "The Birds" by Aristophanes, 448-380BC. The term is Greek for "Cloud Cuckoo Land", a utopian city in the clouds that the play's main character, Makedo, convinces the birds to build.

"The Birds tells the story of an ordinary Athenian, Makedo, who sets out with his friend, Goodhope, to escape the hustle and bustle of congested city life. These old men are tired of the law courts, politics, false oracles, and military antics of their fellow citizens, and they resolve to seek out a place to live where they can end their days in peace and tranquility absolving themselves of their civic responsibilities. To this end, our heroes seek out the Hoopoe. This is the mythical king, Tereus, famous in Athenian legends and the subject of a renowned play by Sophocles (now lost). Tereus was once the king of Thrace and married to the Athenian princess Procne. He raped Procne's sister, Philomena, and to prevent her from revealing the crime, he imprisoned her and cut out her tongue. But Philomena managed to inform her sister of the outrage, and in revenge, Procne killed her only son by Tereus, Itys. When Tereus discovered the crime, he took up his axe and perused the sisters, but the gods, taking pity, turned Procne into the nightingale (who we meet later in the play), Philomena into a swallow, and Tereus into the Hoopoe with its long, sharp beak."
